Privacy policy

Short version: your recordings never leave your Mac. ScreenReel only sends what it needs to sign you in, know which plan you have and how many Macs use it. We don’t sell your data, show ads or use analytics.
Who we are
ScreenReel (“we”, “us”) makes the ScreenReel app for Mac and runs screenreel.co, and is responsible for the personal information described here. Questions and requests go to hello@screenreel.co.
What stays on your Mac
These are created and kept on your Mac only. We never receive them.
- Your screen recordings, webcam video, microphone and system audio, and every edit you make. They’re saved in your Movies folder.
- Cursor movements, clicks and keyboard timing. ScreenReel notes when a key was pressed and what kind of key it was (a letter, a backspace, an arrow), never which key.
- The position of the text caret used for text tracking, never the text itself.
- A diagnostics log in ~/Library/Logs, which you can choose to send us when you ask for help.
macOS asks for your permission before ScreenReel can record the screen, follow the cursor (Accessibility), or use the microphone or camera. You can change these in System Settings at any time.
What we collect
- Account: your email address and a hashed password (we can’t read your password). We email you codes to confirm your address and reset your password.
- Plan: which plan you have, its status and renewal dates, as reported by our payment provider.
- Your Macs: for each Mac you sign in on, an identifier made from a one-way hash of its hardware ID (the ID itself is never sent), the Mac’s name as set in System Settings ▸ General ▸ Sharing, and when it last checked in. The app checks in when it opens and every few hours so a plan is used on the number of Macs it includes. You see this list, and can sign a Mac out, in ScreenReel’s Settings ▸ Account.
- Technical data: like any internet service, our providers receive your IP address and log requests (time, address, what was requested) to keep the service running and secure.
The app sends no analytics, usage tracking or crash reports.
This website
screenreel.co sets no cookies and uses no analytics, ad or tracking scripts. Our web host logs requests, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site running.
Why we use it
- To create your account, sign you in and provide the plan you chose (needed to perform our agreement with you).
- To apply each plan’s Mac limit and prevent abuse of accounts (our legitimate interest in a fair, working service).
- To email you about your account: confirmation and reset codes, and important changes to the service or these policies. We don’t send marketing emails unless you ask for them.
- To meet legal obligations, such as tax and accounting rules for payments.
Who handles it
We share personal information only with providers that run parts of ScreenReel for us, under contracts that limit what they can do with it:
- Supabase: our database and sign-in service, which also sends account emails.
- Lemon Squeezy: sells Pro subscriptions as the merchant of record. It collects your payment details, name, email and billing address under its own privacy policy, and tells us only your plan and its status. We never see or store your card.
- Our web host: serves screenreel.co.
We don’t sell or rent personal information, or share it for advertising. We disclose it to authorities only when the law requires us to.
Where it’s stored
Our providers store and process data outside Quebec and Canada, mainly in the United States, where privacy laws differ. We check that they protect it adequately before using them. When data leaves the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, it is protected by the safeguards our providers offer, such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Account and plan information: while your account exists. When you ask us to delete your account, we delete it within 30 days.
- A Mac’s record: until you sign that Mac out or delete your account.
- Request logs: for a limited time set by our providers, for security.
- Payment records: kept by Lemon Squeezy for as long as tax and accounting laws require.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we have about you, and give you a copy in a portable format;
- correct it;
- delete it, along with your account;
- stop or limit a use of it, or withdraw a consent you gave.
Email hello@screenreel.co from your account’s address. ScreenReel is operated by Jean-Philippe Baillargeon, a sole proprietor. We answer within 30 days and never charge for it. You can also complain to your privacy regulator, for example a data protection authority in the EU or UK, the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec, or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. California residents: we don’t sell or share personal information as those terms are defined in California law.
Security
Everything the app sends is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Passwords are stored hashed, and your session is kept in your Mac’s Keychain. No system is perfectly secure: if a breach puts your information at risk, we’ll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
ScreenReel isn’t meant for children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you think a child has given us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
When we change this policy we update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use information you already gave us, we’ll email you before it takes effect.
